Tripod Pencil Grasp

I visited G's preschool classroom last week prior to meeting with his team of teachers to discuss his progress and his IEP.  For those of you who don't speak special needs, an IEP is an  Individualized Education Program, once a year I mneet with his teachers and therapists to developing goals and objectives for him.  My main concerns are G's physical limitations, his large and fine motor issues, specifically his pencil grasp, which is very poor.  I discussed this in detail with G's OT (Occupational Therapist).

G ready for circle time.
His job last week was "song helper".  He choose 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider'.

Overall, the IEP meeting went well.  I love all of G's teachers and therapists.  I have been so impressed with his school.  G's PT (physical therapist) raved about G's accomplishments.  At one point she stated that G is doing things she never thought she would see him do.  So, obviously, he is making huge gains in that arena.  It was reported that his shape and color recognition is inconsistent.  I am thinking pattern blocks for Christmas.  G's OT passed along a new to me pencil grip.  Love it and so does G.  Today he proudly showed off his new and improved pencil grasp......completely independently.  I simply placed the grip on his pencil and set it in the can with the other pencils and he picked it up and started writing using a proper tripod dencip grasp. We made a huge deal out of this.  He was beaming with pride.  I love this boy.
