A had her biopsy yesterday and was a super trouper. Originally her appointment was supposed to be at 7:30 but unfortunately it had to be changed to 12:30 thus I had a fasting toddler on my hands all morning. Both she and G slept late the morning of our appointment. She woke before G and I whisked her out of the house before he was up. We spent a few hours at the Children’s Museum before going to the hospital. This proved to be a great way to distract her from her hunger (husband A’s smart idea). It was only after leaving the museum that she started asking for food. I explained to her that we had to see that doctor first and afterwards she would be able to eat. That made sense to her and she moved on from her hunger. She was great at the hospital. She liked the hospital bed and we played “night night”. We took turns being the sleeper. The nurse instructed me not to make a big deal about a good- bye (smart suggestion) so when it was finally time for the procedure I walked next to the bed with her as they wheeled her down the hall and I simply stopped walking as we neared the OR and no drama followed, off she went like a big girl. I hated my 40 wait in the family lounge. A kind volunteer eventually called for me and took me to the recovery area. I arrived before A. She was wheeled over to me and it was reported that she woke up really sweetly and asked for me. She was placed in my arms under those lovely warm blankets. The doctor said that he isn’t able to know for certain until the results of the biopsy are in but he continued to say that there was no doubt that she has a gluten intolerance. We meet with him and a dietician next Wednesday. He instructed me to start her on a gluten free diet now. I wasn’t really expecting that but here we are at the end of our 1st gluten free day. We did it. Husband A was at home today so he made French toast. He used regular bread for G and used gluten free bread for A. Gluten free (and nitrate free) hotdogs for lunch and quesadilla made using corn tortillas and our left over flank steak. This evening meal might not have been 100% gluten free as when we made the steak the other night it was marinated with Worcestershire sauce which might contain gluten. We still have a lot to learn. The important question in my mind now is how sever A’s issues are. From what I have read there is a difference between a gluten intolerance and Celiac disease. Those individuals with Celiac disease need to worry about cross contamination and concern themselves with where their gluten free food is processed. So while we still have a lot to learn our gluten free days have begun.
