Gluten.....Again
The last time we saw A's gastrologist he gave us the great news that A did not have a gluten intollerance and that the blood work that prompted her biopsy must have been a false positive. He directed us to have her blood redrawn in 6 months just to make sure that all the levels were normal. Well.....we were recently contacted (at three months out from our good news appointment) that the doctor wanted to have the blood redrawn now rather than wait for the 6 month mark. What? Alarming. We have learned from A's most recent blood test that her "gluten levels" are off the chart. My words, not the doctors. A normal test would result in a gluten level (this is so not the medical term for the actual test that was done) of around ten. A's first test showed a level around 50. This second blood test shows levels around 150! We are going to repeat the biopsy this week and meet again with the doctor to determin A's diagnosis. I am less anxious about a (probable) diagnosis of Celiac disease than I was the first time around. Not to undermine this huge lifestyle change for our family....I guess I just feel less angry about it now than I did 4 months ago. I'm glad I didn't delete all of those Celiac/gluten blogs/websites I had bookmarked.
